How I made my first $100 with Etsy
If you build it. It will literally come.
Because you’re you. rule. shop.
This year I decided to open my shop on Etsy. Etsy allows me to join a larger marketplace that customers are already actively searching to find unique goods.
Since I’ve done all sorts of planning and organizing, that’s why I decided to share my crafty creations through a digital planner printable. Like from getting out of debt, how to save and budget, planning a family vacation, business startups, retirement planning, and so much more!
During the weekend I allocate 1-2 hours creating one to two designs of digital planners to load up my Etsy store using my MacBook pages. A lot of Etsy sellers use Canva. Canva is a free graphic design platform that provides free professionally designed templates that you can try too.
One of the main reasons people buy stuff on Etsy is because they want to buy from a “real” person – a handmade seller like you! So treat your Etsy shop as a business and it is important to be personable in your shop listings.
Normally, the first sale will always be the hardest sale to get, but the second, and third sale will eventually come next easily. Don’t get discouraged and always make customer service your #1 priority.
How to start an Etsy store in 5 easy steps
1. Create an Etsy account
Register a free Etsy account. On that page, click Open your Etsy shop. You can sign up with your Google or Facebook account. Just simply follow the step-by-step process to navigate to the Shop Manager.
2. Organize Your Etsy Store
Once you’re inside the Shop Manager section, you’ll need to set up your shop. Having a prominently engaging shop is a great way to get more sales.
Have an appealing cover photo and profile picture, and be sure to have your “about” section, and shop policies all completely filled out.
Whenever you are ready to list your product, I highly recommend creating categories so that shoppers can easily navigate what they are looking for.
3. Be Consistent on Listing New Products in Your Etsy Store
Consistency creates momentum. List new products as often as possible so shoppers will have new inventory to choose from. Use discount coupons once in a while. So by doing this, you will start building your followers and shoppers in your new Etsy store.
4. Have a Better Practice on SEO
It is crucial to make your Etsy shop SEO- optimized because many shoppers are surely going to come to the internet to search about the product they are looking for. Make sure you are including keywords on your product description to help your shop to rank easily at the top of search engine.
5. Write a Personal “Thank You” Note
Thank you notes are not only notes of gratitude of saying thank you for the purchase. They’re an opportunity to reach out, to connect and it’s a kindness to repay a kindness.
There you have it, some of the tips and tricks that I personally used to make my first $100 on Etsy.
How much does it cost to open an Etsy store
Opening an Etsy store will cost you nothing. It’s free to open your shop with Etsy and there are no monthly fees to run an Etsy store. For each item you list for sale, you’ll be charged a fee of $0.20 cents. The same goes for any listing you renew.
Etsy listings expire after four months. Inside your shop manager when you are listing a product, you can set the listing renewal automatically at the end of the four-month period or manually.
Is it worth selling on Etsy?
There are many successful Etsy sellers earning an average income of $40K-$50k annually. Actually, the time you commit to your business, the amount of money you make, and how you view the goals of your business are entirely up to you.
Personally, I do supplement my income in many other ways, and Etsy is one of the passive income streams that I set to generate extra cash online.
If you really love to put your creative side in the marketplace, Etsy could be a good side hustle for you. Opening an Etsy shop is like any other small business, there is significant potential for failure and you have to be willing to put in a lot of upfront work before you see the cash start to flow.
Final Thoughts
Imagine with so many people making their purchases online nowadays, putting your crafty creations on Etsy gives you the ability to reach more customers than doing the traditional retail store.
I remember when I used to work with the snack food manufacturing company, pitching our products to 7 Eleven convenience store, takes a lot of time and money before you even get your product to the shelves.
Whereas with Etsy, you can open and run your shop in under 30 minutes.
